Rated 4 out of 5 by from EVERYONE WITH A PC SHOULD HAVE ONE HANDY - EASY TO USE - INEXPENSIVE If you are having trouble getting a drive letter to show up and you are connecting an IDE drive... CHECK the DRIVE FOR JUMPERS! Initially I couldn't get a drive letter. When I connected the drive & powered the cable my computer would detect the usb mass storage device, but wouldn't assign a drive letter. I only got 1 out of 10 old IDE drives to work. After a few moments of frustration, I quickly realized that the 1 that DID work had no jumpers and the drives that did not work indeed had jumpers. I removed all jumpers and Voila - instant drive letters. I was then easily able to retrieve my old data.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does exactly what I needed at half the price of retail. I record multi-track audio onto older drives. This product gives me access to the tracks via USB. It does the job flawlessly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great time saver! I am using it to access files from my old computer Hard Drive while I configure and transfer the files I need to keep on my "new" computer. I don't want all the junk files I have collected on the new machine, but I don't want to take the time to sort all the files before moving. This way I have my old drive as an external but readily accessible location for the files I need as I make the transition to the new machine. One negative issue: while testing the cable I tried several old Hard Drives I had lying around and it only worked on the fully functional ones. i.e. If a drive wasn't formatted it wasn't recognized. It works for me . . .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to Go I recently junked a six year old PowerMac, but wanted to make sure I did not lose the data. No longer having an updated version of the OS I needed to run it, nor a monitor/keyboard combo to access it, I purchase the USB 2.0 to IDE or Serial ATA Drive Adapter. I removed the hard disk from the PowerMac and recycled the system at with chain retailer for free. The adapter allowed me to access the disk from my MacBook Pro and copy the data without a glitch. Now that the data is safe, I can destroy the hard disk and be comfortable that I have not lost data and no one else can access it without my permission.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love cables. Wish they were more reliable I use this cable fairly frequently for data recovery from disks where the operating system has been corrupted. It's a great design concept, but I'm on my fourth set of cables due to various failures, from the power switch to the main adapter box. Basically, it needs to be more rugged and reinforced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Happy With Product My wife's computer died. She had lots of data on the internal C drive she wanted. I purchased a new laptop for her. Then, I bought this product to connect her old c drive to the new laptop through the USB port. Product worked perfectly. Still using old c drive as her new external drive.

Can I use this to clone my new drive?

Asked by: Anonymous
That will depend more on software used to clone, however it will function like a USB flash drive or external USB hard drive.

Even if it isn't "supported" on Linux, I have used this adapter just fine from both Ubuntu Linux and Debian Linux.

1.I have an emachine with Windows XP on it. It is 7 years old. I cannot boot . I get an error message that there is a disk error. I need to recover all my data from the hard drive. Can I do this by just plugging in this device to the computer's USB port with the computer on, or do i have to remove the hard drive from the computer in order to use this device?
Asked by: Anonymous
When this happened to me, I had to remove the internal hard drive. I had to use another computer with a working bootable hard drive. Then connect your defective hard drive as a D, E, ... etc. externally in the working computer. If you had a surface CRASH, you may have some of the data actually scraped from the surface of the aluminum platters. You may be able to recover some of the data, but not all of it if there was an actual surface (head crash). You are lucky to get 7 years of use from a hard drive if that is the original one. Most hard drives now have 1 year, 3 year, or 5 year warranties. If you recover your data, try and reformat the original hard drive, but DO NOT try to recover bad sectors. You may be able to continue using the OEM parts a little longer.

Hi, How do I power a 2.5 IDE laptop hard drive? The USB connects just fine but I don't see anyway to get power to the drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Asked by: Rob
You would need the Laptop to IDE Hard Drive Adapter Cable, part 17705, to connect to your hard drive. To power it, you would use the 4-Pin Molex connector.

1- Can I use this adapter kit to clone an SSD from my Win 7 Pro computer? 2- Does the SSD need the power on to use this adapter kit?

This will not clone a HD by itself this would need another device in order to do so. This device needs to be powered in order to power the drive.
